A strong magnitude 6.0 earthquake rattled Sichuan province in China this morning, killing at least one and seriously injuring over 23 more. The quake struck at 5:49 pm local time with an epicenter 30 miles (50 kilometers) north-northwest of Guangyuan, China. According to the China Earthquake Networks Center, this was a continued aftershock in the wake of the massive 7.9 tremor which struck the same region back in May.

As the earthquake hit, panicked residents in Qingchuan County fled into the streets as buildings and homes swayed. In Shaanxi province, the temblor caused a major jolt throughout many cities.  Communication lines were disrupted in Yaodu. The quake struck just hours after the Olympic torch relay passed through the Sichuan province capital of Chengdu. Details of damage have yet to be made available.

More than 12,600 aftershocks have rattled southwest China since the massive May 12th earthquake.  At least seven of those aftershocks have had a magnitude greater than 6.0.
