London (26 August, 2014) Aon Risk Solutions, the global risk management business of Aon plc (NYSE: AON), was proud to be invited to present at a recent Cyber Security Summit specifically tailored for financial services companies.  The event was attended by over 120 delegates from across the financial services industry who heard from keynote speakers such as members of the UK Government and the Bank of England.

Aon’s Cyber Practice Leader for EMEA, Sarah Stephens, gave a key address presenting recent Aon data from its Cyber Diagnostic tool which highlighted some of the specific risks facing the financial services industry.  “For instance, one critical fact distinguishing financial services companies is that 99% of respondents have declared storing some form of private data on behalf of their customers and/or employees. A closer look into the data specifically reveals that 38% of Financial Institutions hold a combination of financial and health related data and 22% store financial, health as well as other forms of personal data such as unique tax number, religion.”

Sarah Stephens, EMEA Practice Leader – Cyber at Aon said “The recent high profile attacks on financial institutions such as the European Central Bank outline how cyber crime is an increasing business risk and should be taken seriously by the Board. Financial service institutions need to address how they can increase their ability to classify and prioritize cyber exposures. At Aon, we aim to help companies collaborate across their different departments

As part of the event, Sarah also recently commented in a related BBC interview where she specifically encourages organisations to take a holistic look at cyber risk as threats do exist beyond hacking, such as insider threats, human error and third party relationships to name a few.
