Aon statement: Steps to take following the blizzard of 2015

CHICAGO (Feb. 3, 2015)The blizzard that covered much of the Midwest on Sunday made its way throughout the Northeast on Monday. Aon Global Risk Consulting, the risk management consulting arm of Aon plc (NYSE: AON), today offers the following steps to take immediately following the storm to ensure your business runs smoothly.

Immediate steps to take if damage has occurred:

  • Focus on mitigating the loss immediately
  • Alert the insurance carrier of potential losses
  • Review insurance policies with a broker
  • Start the claim process

Additional tips from Aon Global Risk Consulting:

  • Continually check the roof(s) of building(s) to remove snow or ice that could fall on pedestrians below. Note, shovels and other hard-edged tools can potentially cause damage to roofs causing leaks membranes and roof system.

  • If you notice any deflection in the roof structure, that is a good indication of a potential roof collapse or failure.

  • Are the utilities to the site operational? If not has the generator started? Is there sufficient fuel on hand for an extended outage?

  • Check for downed live electrical wires. If so, contact local emergency responders.

  • Assess damage at site. Once the damage is properly assessed, you will be able to reach out to suppliers and customers to ensure that they are still able to deliver and receive orders. This will help you to decide where you need to focus and prioritize your recovery efforts.

  • Ensure that all documentation that you have related to any costs is retained as insurers will need these in the event of a claim.

  • Communicate to key organization stakeholders, including executives, communications/PR, financial and legal teams.

  • Contact your property risk consultant to ensure that they are aware of the damage and impact to your firm. If you have a service (such as Aon Rapid Response), your contract will ensure immediate site visits and claim advocacy on behalf of your losses.
