Aon Hewitt Announces its Best Employers Indonesia 2013 Awards
Recognizing Employers who Empower Results

JAKARTA, May 21, 2013 Aon Hewitt, the global talent, retirement and health solutions business of Aon plc (NYSE: AON), has just announced its 2013 list of Best Employers Indonesia Awards as part of its 10-country study of the Best Employers in Asia Pacific.  PT. Adira Dinamika Multi Finance, Tbk topped this year’s roster as the “Best of the Best” in Indonesia.

Aon Hewitt’s Best Employers study was first conducted in Asia in 2001. The purpose of the study was to gain insights into companies that are creating real competitive advantage through their people, to explore what makes a workplace of choice, and to identify the Best Employers in the region.

Aon Hewitt’s Best Employers Study has become the most comprehensive study of its kind in Asia Pacific. It is conducted in 10 markets: Australia/New Zealand, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand. The research involves a rigorous process, conducted over a nine-month period, which culminates in a solid, credible list of Best Employers. This year, seven organizations were named Best Employers in Indonesia:

Three special recognition awards were introduced this year in Asia: the Best Employer for Generation Y was awarded to PT. Adira Dinamika Multi Finance, Tbk in Indonesia; PT. Johnson Home Hygiene Products was singled out for Best Employer for Commitment to Engagement.  The third special recognition award, Best Employer for Women, was not adjudged this year in Indonesia.

The most noticeable trends that emerged in this year’s Best Employers Study were:

  • Best Employers achieved 4% higher growth and 4% lower employee-attrition levels than study participants.  Best Employers also successfully filled 20% more job openings internally, compared to other study participants.

  • Key business challenges identified by CEOs highlight the importance of improving people and organizational areas: 67% of Business Leaders identified people issues as their top business challenges.

  • Higher Engagement: Best Employers not only enjoy significantly higher engagement scores from their employees (89%) than the Indonesia market average (71%), they also outperform the market by scoring an average of 23% higher than market average in the four drivers with which Indonesia employees were “least satisfied with”  -- benefits (73%), pay (76%), career opportunities (76%), and brand alignment (76%).

  • Employer Brand: The most prevalent messages Indonesia employers are emphasizing in their employer Brand are: Pride in organization’s products, services and brand , Learning, Well-being and being inspired and supported by Great Leaders.  However, only 7% of participating organizations reported complete alignment between the CEO and HR on the actual definition of their employer brand.

  • Effective Leadership: The vast majority of participating organizations in Indonesia have been more deliberate in promoting leadership development by means of “experiential developmental opportunities” such as rotational assignments (67% participant average), special project teams (67% participant average), and interactions with senior executives (80% participant average).

  • High Performance Culture: Performance management systems at Best Employers are perceived to be more effective by their employees: 81% of the employees at Best Employers agreed that “The way we manage performance here enables me to contribute as much as possible to our organization’s success.”, as compared with 69% of the employees at other organizations.  Rina Sjoekri, Aon Hewitt Indonesia country head added: “Our research suggests that organizations linking the performance of people managers to team-engagement levels benefit from a 13% higher employee perception of ‘support provided by the manager to succeed in one’s job.’”

  •  Engaging Generation Y emerged as a key focus for Best Employers in Indonesia with a distinctly high engagement score of 81% in this age group. “Best Employers know how to engage Gen Y by offering activities and initiatives that are aligned with their competitive nature, and not merely rewarding them with financial gratitude,” added Sjoekri.

After more than a decade of experience conducting Best Employers research, Aon Hewitt has fine-tuned its approach and methodology based on the changing HR trends in Asia. The 2013 study differentiates itself from previous runs and other offerings in the market by means of its professional, data-driven approach that collects data from three distinct sources: employees, HR and the CEO. In addition, an external, independent judging panel composed of reputable business, academic and media leaders is appointed to blindly deliberate and decide on each year’s list of Best Employers. The study is built on a clearly articulated framework of four key themes, identified as critical for today’s HR agenda:

  • High employee engagement
  • A compelling employer brand
  • Effective leadership
  • High performance culture

While the Best Employers study recognizes organizations that display standards of excellence, the journey to get there is one that Aon Hewitt recommends for every organization to embark upon. “For organizations that don’t make it to the Best Employers list, but are aspiring to become Best Employers, we want to reinforce that becoming a Best Employer doesn’t happen overnight,” says Gabriela Domicelj, Asia Pacific engagement practice leader and Best Employers Study lead at Aon Hewitt. “It is possible for everyone to become a Best Employer if you’ve articulated the destination you want to head to and have planned your journey wisely.”

Participation in Aon Hewitt’s survey brings a wide range of benefits for organizations, such as finding out how employees perceive and rate their employer, the reasons why they are attracted to certain employer brands, and the type of organizational culture they value sufficiently to “stay and strive.”  The study also provides a benchmark against company competitors in the market. Participating organizations gain access to Aon Hewitt’s latest market research insights, along with the best and most innovative people practices of Best Employers.
