Aon Collaborates with Spencer Educational Foundation to Establish the Rick Miller Property Risk Management Scholarship
Scholarship Honors Industry Leader and Builds Future Generations of Leaders

New York, NY (July 10, 2024) — Aon, a leading global professional services firm, and nonprofit organization the Spencer Educational Foundation have joined forces to introduce the Rick Miller Property Risk Management Scholarship. This initiative will support outstanding college students who are dedicated to pursuing careers in risk management and insurance, particularly within the realm of property insurance.

The scholarship is a tribute to the late Rick Miller, a revered figure in the insurance industry known for his unparalleled expertise in property coverage. Throughout his career, Miller made significant contributions as both an underwriter and broker, leaving a lasting impact on the property insurance sector. Miller passed away in April at the age of 62.

“Rick was a giant in our industry and his roots in property insurance ran deep,” said Lori Goltermann, CEO of Regions at Aon. “He built a reputation as a rare talent with exceptional technical acumen and an incredible ability to connect with people. He used his leadership position to elevate others. Whether speaking to a summer intern or a Fortune 500 client, Rick treated everyone with the same level of dignity and respect. It is rare to find someone in our industry who didn’t consider him a friend and I count myself fortunate for having known and worked alongside him.”

Miller spent time with Industrial Risk Insurers (IRI) before joining Alexander & Alexander Inc., which was later bought by Aon, before returning to IRI to run its New York City office. He later worked at American International Group Inc. before rejoining Aon in 2005 as chief broking officer for national property. He was named practice leader in 2016 and ran Aon’s annual property symposium for the past 15 years.

“Spencer is deeply moved by the opportunity to commemorate Rick Miller, one of the industry’s greatest,” said Megan Miller, Spencer’s executive director. “By providing financial assistance to high-achieving students pursuing a path in risk management and insurance, we aim to inspire a new wave of professionals who share Rick's passion for the property sector.”

Applicants for the scholarship will be selected based on their academic performance, leadership qualities and dedication to pursuing a career in the insurance industry. The scholarship fund will not only offer financial support but also provide recipients with lifelong career support, mentorship opportunities and a chance to attend Aon’s Property Symposium annually.

Students interested in applying for the Rick Miller Property Risk Management Scholarship are encouraged to visit the Spencer website (www.spencered.org/scholarships) for more information on eligibility criteria and application details. Aon and Spencer look forward to identifying promising rising talent who will undoubtedly shape the future of the property insurance landscape.

Aon will be raising most of the scholarship funding through its own contributions and private fundraisers. To contribute to the Rick Miller Property Risk Management Scholarship and support future risk and insurance leaders, please visit https://givebutter.com/RickMillerScholarship.
