Managing Risks and Building Resiliency to Mitigate Increasing Extreme Weather Events
December 16, 2022

353 words…two minute read

What’s happening this week: Sri Lanka shut down schools as extreme weather conditions brought pollution, causing unhealthy air conditions. At least two dozen people were killed and another two were injured as heavy rains and winds impacted many parts of the nation.

Weather events are becoming more severe and occurring more frequently around the globe. Organizations increasingly need to forecast their impacts and mitigate the physical and non-physical risks presented by these events. Aon provides data and insights to help address these events, including:

  • Certain conditions like heatwaves are conducive to the development and accumulation of atmospheric pollutants such as ozone and particulate matter, which can have adverse impacts on respiratory and cardiovascular health. Learn more about the potential risks that come with climate change here.
  • Natural catastrophe models help deliver more long-term and holistic insights for organizations. Following record 2021 European flood activity, Aon’s extended collaboration with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology incorporates the latest climate science into Impact Forecasting models to help develop more accurate loss estimates. Read more about how Aon helps clients prepare for natural catastrophes amid extreme rainfall.
  • According to Eric Andersen, president of Aon, “Climate change is inherently tied to other, more tangible risks, where the immediate impact is measurable – such as business interruption, damage to reputation, regulatory changes and supply chain issues.” Learn more about how organizations can face the climate crisis and the risks it brings in The Economist.
  • Aon CEO Greg Case spoke  during the Monte Carlo Rendez-Vous event earlier this year, highlighting the issue of climate volatility. “Insurance exists to protect the things you can’t afford to lose. With climate change, if we lean into the challenge, innovate and collaborate on a scale not seen before, we have a generational opportunity to make a difference in the global economy,” Case said. “Climate change must be a priority, in every way, shape or form.” Read more about his talk on climate change in Artemis.
